Fall/winter travel report: Hot destinations, cool prices

Need one last getaway before the hustle of the holidays? Some popular destinations are steeply discounting due to the general slump in travel.

This fall and winter, the best deals are in Europe. Whether your ideal vacation is a cozy ski chalet or museum hopping and couture shopping, deals abound. Here are the best places to look for deals.

  • Reduced airfare — On average, airfare to Europe is down about 13% over last year, with even steeper discounts to Madrid, Paris and Rome.
  • Hotel bargains — Most chains are running specials of one sort of another. Some, like Concorde Hotels & Resorts, are offering lower prices on standard rooms. Others, including Hyatt and Starwood, are offering packages with perks. They can range from “four nights for the price of three” deals to special promotions that bundle cultural excursions, free meals and other goodies into the standard room price. Specific deals vary by destination and date.
  • Premium packages at discount prices — For travelers looking to book everything at once, the best air/hotel packages are currently in Amsterdam and London, which are each roughly 30% below the typical price. Other hot spots for deals include Barcelona and Dublin.

Looking to go off the beaten path? Travel experts recommend Iceland. The country’s economic collapse last year has slashed prices in what was once one of the most expensive countries to visit.
