If your business accepts payments on credit cards or is thinking about it, here’s some good news.
Visa and Mastercard, two of the heavyweights in the industry, have agreed to a policy change that will allow you to charge customers more for paying with plastic. The change is part of a massive, multipart court settlement over so-called “swipe fees.”
The terms of the deal include two stipulations you should be aware of:
- If you charge customers to offset swipe fees, you can only tack on an amount equal to the fees you pay, and
- You must disclose the charge to customers at the time of the sale and on any accompanying invoices.
Note: Some major retailers have voiced their opposition to the settlement. Their beef: It still gives the credit card companies too much control over fee structures.
