How is Michigan going to replace all the auto manufacturing jobs it’s losing? The governor hopes green industries will be a major contributor.
Jennifer Granholm has set out to remake Michigan as a pioneer in creating environmentally friendly jobs.
One recent win: California-based Clairvoyant Energy.
With a tax incentive package worth more than $100 million, Michigan beat out Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Spain in getting Clairvoyant and two other alternative-energy firms to take a factory that once made Fords and Lincolns and turn it into a solar panel and battery storage pack manufacturer. It employs 4,000.
And that’s what Michigan needs right now. For three years, it’s had the nation’s worst unemployment rate. Right now it’s 15.2%.
Granholm’s weapons in her economic arsenal include tax credits, loans and even Super Bowl tickets.
The state’s program, “No Worker Left Behind,” is retraining former factory workers so they gain valuable skills for the “new” economy.
She’s been named “Jenny the cheerleader” for her efforts to bring jobs – green and otherwise – to Michigan.
Rather than cheerleader, she prefers “zealot.”
