Government appears to be attempting to take a page from private industry’s book when it comes to technology — question is: Will private industry tactics and techniques translate to the bureaucratic world.President Obama invited a number of corporate execs to meet with the government’s CIO and CTO this week in an effort to bring cutting edge technologies used in the private sector to trim costs and boost productivity in government.
White House officials hope new technologies, such as the Web and text messaging, will pave the way for savings and a more efficient government.
But some worry that the private sector’s methods may not translate so easily to federal agencies.
“We see a big gap in technology from the private sector and the federal government in terms of productivity and service quality,” said Jeffrey Zients, the Office of Management and Budget’s deputy director for management told the Washington Post.
Among those expected at the meeting were Microsoft’s chief executive Steve Ballmer, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, Sprint Nextel’s chief executive Dan Hesse, Pepsi’s chief executive Indra K. Nooyi, and Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes.
