Obama gets tougher on employer paperwork violations

Recent actions by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement cops show the Obama administration is putting some real teeth in its focus on employer violations of I-9s and other work-status requirements.

One proof: Last year, the agency did random investigations to make sure employers were following the rules. Of course, some violators got caught in the net and were warned or fined. But it doesn’t end there.

The agency has announced – and sent a clear warning – that any companies that got cited last year will get another visit from investigators this year to make sure violators have their act together and are following the rules.

So the message from the agency has been sent: If we uncover paperwork glitches, expect to see us again and again and again …

Reminder: An audit or reaudit by ICE may cover your entire workforce and even multiple sites if your company has branches. That means there probably will be checks on identity theft for all employees.
