The most dangerous substance-abuse policy

One type of policy makes an employer most vulnerable to problems of substance abuse among workers.

That policy? No policy. That is, companies that believe “we don’t have a problem” and thus don’t articulate a policy are more likely to get stung by substance abuse, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The reasons:

  • They’re the employers of choice for substance abusers looking for workplaces that aren’t vigilant.
  • They’re usually smaller companies that take the biggest hit when an accident or other problem is caused by an impaired employee.

Check with your HR people on whether you have a policy, and whether it’s up-to-date. The U.S. Labor Department can help with policy templates.
