Unlikely revenue source: your printers

If you’re throwing out old ink cartridges, you may want to reconsider – and not just because it’s bad for the environment.

Reason: More and more companies are offering cash for cartridges.

Evolve Recycling, one of the leading companies in the movement, offers $10 for each undamaged, used cartridge, depending on the make and model.

Plenty of other smaller online companies are cropping up, as well. Many of them offer prepaid shipping labels, boxes and collection bins. Companies like Evolve reuse the empty cartridges and sell them rehabbed and refilled for significantly less than a new cartridge from one of the big printing companies.

Rewards programs with printing companies and office supplies stores are also popular. For example, Hewlett-Packard (HP) offers redeemable points for free products in exchange for used original-HP cartridges.

Another option: Host your own fundraiser. Many organizations support cartridge and e-waste collection and give the proceeds to a good cause, such as CURE Recycling and the Funding Factory. Hosting a fundraiser can highlight your company’s green efforts and garner some good publicity.
